THE MAGIC OF MIME
Do actions speak louder than
words? This workshop presents the
spontaneity and expressiveness of
mime, with techniques from
traditions both Western (silent
film, classical French mime,
circus) and Eastern (Indian
classical dance, Chinese animal
chi gung). Areas of study include
character development, illusions,
physical training, traditional
movements, mask and makeup
fundamentals, improvisation, and
performance techniques. A
presentation is often the finale
of longer workshops.

FUNNY BUSINESS: THE ART OF
CLOWN
This workshop, popular with
children as well as adults,
offers: discovering a unique clown
persona, physically expressing
character and reaction, using
ordinary everyday objects as comic
props, improvisation, and learning
classic clown routines. Other
available topics are: makeup and
costumes, the clown in different
world cultures, and creating
material for performance. Longer
workshops can culminate in a final
show. |

OPENDANCE: MOVEMENT
IMPROVISATION
This workshop for new and
experienced dancers presents
techniques to develop spontaneity,
focus, and expressiveness. As in
jazz music, improvisation in dance
is based on the interplay of
structure and freedom. Class
begins with exercises to open and
strengthen the body. Elements of
dance improvisation include:
physical focuses both internal and
external; structures and themes;
elements of composition;
partnering; group dynamics; and
free improvisation. Students
develop more confidence, grace,
and the joy and power of their own
movement. |

CHINESE ANIMAL CHI GUNG
This invigorating, fun, non-impact
class is recommended for people of
all ages, for those with chronic
pain, for dancers and athletes,
and for those just beginning a
movement discipline.
These exercises combine the
elegance of dance, the focus of
t'ai chi, and the playfulness of
mime. Inspired by animal and human
archetypes, they were developed by
Hua Tuo, the father of Chinese
medicine. Some are beautiful and
powerful, others are animated,
even comical. They are a dynamic
moving meditation, designed to
enhance health and vitality.

INVITING THE MUSE: CREATIVITY
WORKSHOP
This introduction to many forms of
creative expression draws from:
• movement (dance, yoga, mime,
Eastern disciplines)
• voice (speaking, singing,
sounds)
• and visual arts (drawing,
collage, mask-making,
self-decoration).
The techniques presented in these
various disciplines form the basis
for experimentation and
collaboration - to uncover new
avenues of personal expression.
The emphasis is on fun, freedom,
and spontaneity in an atmosphere
of discovery and support.

MIME AS A TEACHING TOOL:
AN ARTIST-EDUCATOR COLLABORATION
Children learn with their minds,
bodies, and all their senses. This
unique approach presents mime as a
means for students to experience
and inhabit a subject with their
imaginations and their whole
beings. Often presented with a
teacher or specialist in the
chosen subject, exercises give
students the chance to physicalize
the information which they are
learning. For example, they may be
studying the weightlessness of
space travel, and through learning
illusions of flying and slow
motion movement they can “become”
astronauts floating in their own
space capsule. Any subject can be
enhanced in this way. Past topics
have included the Stone Age,
Animals, Life in 1900, and Ancient
Egypt.

MIME FOR THE CLASSROOM:
WORKSHOP FOR TEACHERS
This presentation focuses on
skills which teachers - from
pre-school through 5th grade
levels - can use to enhance
classroom activities and
illuminate specific subjects.
Fundamentals of physical
expression included in the
training are illusions, character
expression, body awareness,
improvisation, and movement
vocabulary. Use of imagination,
physical expression, and
spontaneity are emphasized in an
atmosphere of support and fun.
